In this role, he advises the Management and all specialist departments of RAL gGmbH and RAL e. V. on all legal matters relevant to the organisation. His areas of expertise are primarily competition law, trademark law, and licensing contract law. He also oversees contract management, continuously refining the underlying standards and contractual frameworks.

A central part of his role involves managing RAL’s trademark portfolio. This forms the basis for the neutral, objective and independent RAL labels, which have been providing consumers, industry and trade with reliable guidance since 1925.

A key focus of his work is providing legal support to the business areas in which RAL acts as an awarding body. These include the environmental label Blue Angel, the EU Ecolabel, the Nutri-Score food traffic light system and the licensing of Stiftung Warentest’s test logos.

He also represents RAL in external dealings, conducts contracts and settlement negotiations, and coordinates legal communication with the relevant authorities, external law firms, quality assurance associations, and other business partners.

Dr. David Chatterjee reports directly to RAL’s Management, consisting of Rüdiger Wollmann, Thomas Roßbach and Christoph Eßer-Ayertey.

By establishing the legal department, RAL is responding to the company’s growth and increasing regulatory requirements. The aim is to further strengthen the organisation’s structure and to professionalise legal processes on a long-term basis.

Prior to joining RAL, Dr. David Chatterjee spent the last five years at The Walt Disney Company (Germany) GmbH in Munich, initially as a Senior Attorney and most recently as Counsel. There, his responsibilities included matters relating to licensing agreements for the Disney+ streaming service, as well as numerous other legal issues across the DACH region – including content acquisition, local productions, marketing, promotions, real estate and audience measurement. Prior to this, he worked at the IP-Boutique rwzh Rechtsanwälte in Munich (2013–2017) and at Vodafone in Unterföhring and Düsseldorf (2018–2020). After a total of 13 years as a solicitor and in-house counsel, he is now continuing his career at RAL.
