Public institutions help to reduce pollution and set an example. This is why environmental certification of products is particularly important for companies that want to submit their products to public tenders. Often, the environmental label Blue Angel is required.

There are many reasons for governmental environmental labelling:
- Trustworthy
- Scientifically developed
- Transparent award criteria
- High level of awareness among consumers
- Independently tested and certified
- Required in public procurement
- Internationally recognised

Environmental label Blue Angel
Since the introduction of the world’s first eco-label in 1978, RAL has been the awarding body for the Blue Angel eco-label, authorized by the German government. As a holistic environmental label with around 100 award criteria for products and services from various industries, it defines various requirements along the product life cycle, from the origin of raw materials, production, packaging and social criteria to disposal and recycling.
The Blue Angel is particularly well known in Germany, but also in Europe and many other countries around the world.

Environmental label EU Ecolabel
The EU Ecolabel is the European Commission’s environmental label and currently comprises 25 award criteria for various products and services. Each Member State has a Competent Body to which companies can apply if they have either their head office or their production site(s) in that country. In Germany, RAL is the competent body. In total, almost 100,000 products and services throughout the EU are certified with the EU Ecolabel.
