RAL as an organisation

RAL Deutsches Institut für Gütesicherung und Kennzeichnung e. V., founded in 1925, is the body responsible for the system of RAL Quality Assurance (RAL Gütesicherung) and the umbrella organisation of all Quality Assurance Associations (Gütegemeinschaften). As an independent, neutral organisation, RAL approves Quality Marks (Gütezeichen) for products and services.
RAL consists of an Executive Board, a Board of Trustees, an AGM and a Management Board. In order to ensure the independence and neutrality of the organisation, both the RAL Executive Board and the Board of Trustees have a balanced composition. The members of the RAL Executive Board and the Board of Trustees are impartial.

Executive Board

The board is made up of independent experts from various sectors of society. These include representatives from testing institutes, consumer organisations, trade associations and federal ministries.

Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees consists of 15 leading associations, three federal ministries, three federal offices and four RAL members. Up to five representatives and one expert each from business, advertising, press, and broadcasting join them.

The AGM

The AGM is a central body of RAL, to which the RAL Quality Assurance Associations also belong. It elects the Executive Board, decides on changes to the Statutes, approves the budget and discharges the Executive Board and the Management.

RAL gGmbH

The RAL COLOURS, RAL ENVIRONMENT and RAL LOGO LICENCE business areas form RAL’s wholly-owned subsidiary RAL gGmbH, which was established in 2008. Through its RAL COLOURS business area, the non-profit limited liability company is responsible for the definition of colour tones and the worldwide distribution of colour design tools. The environmental label Blue Angel and the EU Ecolabel are awarded by RAL ENVIRONMENT. The RAL LOGO LICENCE business area is responsible for the licensing, monitoring and pursuit of misuse of the Stiftung Warentest test logo and the Green Button textile label. In addition, RAL gGmbH offers training at the highest level for colour designers and other colour enthusiasts through the RAL ACADEMY.
