Since 2017, the RAL building in the Beuel district of Bonn has been the home and headquarters of RAL Deutsches Institut für Gütesicherung und Kennzeichnung e. V. and its affiliated company, RAL gGmbH. The office building, which is situated on a 3,000-square-metre site, accommodates the approximately 80 permanent staff members. Part of the building’s design is a spacious conference area for meetings as well as training and further education programmes organised by the RAL Academy. A distinctive feature of the building, which was designed and built by the Bonn-based architect Dipl. Ing. Frank Piotrowski, is the extensive use of RAL-quality-assured products and services across all trades. Colour components from the globally recognised RAL colour system are also used on and inside the building. Furthermore, the use of a wide range of materials awarded the Blue Angel eco-label is in keeping with RAL’s core values.

Facilities in the office building

During the construction of the building, care was taken to use RAL-certified building materials and to engage the relevant services. Numerous products have also been awarded the Blue Angel or the EU Ecolabel. These include a large proportion of the office equipment, such as office chairs and desks, consumables such as washing-up liquid and printer paper, as well as floor coverings.

Power supply, heating and cooling

A photovoltaic system is installed on the spacious flat roof. Any additional electricity required is sourced externally. The RAL building is heated using geothermal energy (ground source heat). In summer, smart sun sails and core cooling built into the ceilings ensure a comfortable indoor climate. Thanks to a heat exchange system, the air inside the building remains consistently warm or pleasantly cool, depending on the season.

Outdoor area with native plants

The outdoor area of the RAL building is landscaped with native wildflowers, shrubs and trees. The building’s own bees find food sources there for honey production.
In addition, the visitor car parks are laid with gravel. When it rains, surface water is channelled via the infiltration areas to the swales for controlled discharge into the groundwater.

Mobility

On request, staff can be provided with a ‘Jobticket’ to travel by public transport. It is also possible to use a ‘Jobrad’ (company bike). In addition, electric vehicle charging points are installed at the RAL building.
